[Information provided by People's Power & Light]

People’s Power & Light is Rhode Island’s non-profit energy consumers’ alliance. Our mission is better energy solutions for Rhode Islanders, not a bigger bottom line. We’re based in Providence, with oversight by a Board of volunteer Rhode Islanders. We’re supported in our efforts by other Rhode Island non-profit groups, like Save The Bay, RI Audubon, American Lung Association of RI, and Roger Williams Park Zoo. We’ve received funding from the Rhode Island Foundation and the Rhode Island Renewable Energy Fund. In addition to offering New England GreenStart in Rhode Island, PP&L offers a heating oil buyers’ group (including a BioHeat option), is a voice for residential energy consumers before the Public Utilities Commission and at the State House, and is working to advance renewable energy projects at universities and businesses around the state.

New England GreenStart RI
Choosing New England GreenStart RI is a great way to support greater use of renewable energy sources located in Rhode Island and New England. New England GreenStart harnesses the support of customers like you to bring more and more renewable energy to our region. We work with local non-profit groups to ensure that GreenStart’s energy sources are acceptable to the local community and are better for the environment. Thirty percent of GreenStart comes from wind energy. Our current wind source is a wind turbine located in the Town of Hull, Massachusetts, overlooking Boston Harbor. One percent of GreenStart comes from solar electric installations in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including the solar installation on the Whole Foods Market in Providence. As we get more GreenStart customers, we’ll be able to support the development of even more wind and solar sources located in Rhode Island and New England. Sixty-nine percent of GreenStart comes from small hydro-electric installations that have been certified by the Low Impact Hydro Institute. Our own staff, working with partner environmental groups, also reviews these hydro-electric sources to ensure that they do not have significant adverse effects.
